Kaskaskia Island’s sloughs and ponds are a Mecca for water birds. Birders flock to this area. Birds can be viewed along most roads on the island.  Herons, egrets, ducks, and stray whooping cranes are often seen here near the Middle Mississippi River National Wildlife Refuge. Even though Kaskaskia is part of Illinois it can only be reached from Missouri.

To visit Kaskaskia, go south on Highway 61 to Highway U in St. Mary.
