Established in 1787, the Oldest Cemetery in Missouri is the resting place for many of the city and state's foremost pioneers. Visitors are welcome to stroll through the park and experience Ste. Genevieve past through interpretive panels and long forgotten architectual cemetery masterpieces. This National Landmark site is managed and maintained by the Foundation for Restoration of Ste. Genevieve, Inc, which is a non-profit organization striving to protect and preserve the area's historic heritage and its structures. With support from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the City of Ste. Genevieve, concerned citizen and student volunteers, the Foundation has recently cleaned, repaired and documented many of the ancient monuments and grounds, and restored or built the enclosures surrounding this most interesting attraction. Ste. Genevieve Museum houses some of the most interesting clips of memorabilia the town has to offer. Whether it's Native American Indian artifacts, a scale-model train, an eighteenth century French flute, a model of one of John J. Audubon's birds, or an original copy of a Spanish land grant, the museum is sure to pique your interest. Located in the heart of the National Historic Landmark District, the museum is open daily and offers interesting souvenirs for purchase. Small admission charge. |
