Ste Geneviève has had a love affair with the arts that goes back long before its famous Art Colony of the 1930's. The town is replete with paintings, sculpture and architecture that portrays its rich and varied history. Whether cave paintings or portraits of family members, this area has always been a magnet for artisans of all specialties.
Visual artists like Thomas Hart Benton and Joe Jones who, along with many other notables, were the catalyst for Ste. Geneviève Artist Colony and Summer School of Art that significantly contributed to twentieth century American art in the 1930's. John J. Audubon's stay in the early 1800s produced not only pictures of wildlife, but gave us wonderful examples of his bird studies, some of which are on display in our own Ste. Geneviève Museum. Famous Illinois artist, Roscoe Misselhorn, has many of his Ste. Geneviève sketches on display in our Visitor's Center.
Many notable pioneers' images are still being displayed on the walls of our historic homes. Numerous documents, archives and a c1832 diorama (inset image) of Ste. Geneviève by local artist Lewis Pruneau also give us a glimpse of who was here, and how they lived their day-to-day lives.
These early explorers and settlers have also left their mark with many varied and beautiful examples of European architecture. Steepled churches, German Limestone or Red Brick structures, Georgian, Queen Anne, Federal or French-Creole styled houses - all can be seen in Ste. Genevieve's Historic District.
Today, Ste. Geneviève is once again thriving with artisans of all types. Whether stained-glass, model making, turned wooden art, mixed-media, oils, watercolors, photographic or hi-tech computer art, Ste. Geneviève has a wide array of styles and mediums for the art aficionado.
